Start days ahead, not on the morning itself. Leave a carrier open in the living room with a blanket and the occasional treat inside, so it stops being the object that only appears before the vet. A cat that gets out mid-journey is a danger to itself and to the driver. Draping a light cloth over it helps: most cats settle faster when they cannot see the road moving.

A little catnip helps on anything meant to be slept on or scratched. Anything worn or handled should be left out to be sniffed and walked away from several times before you use it.
